Product Overview

Archive your Commodore floppies (and CMD HD partitions) to your contemporary PC, without the hassles of external parallel ports, IRQ settings, special adapters, bulky cables, or the alphabet soup of disk drive cable adapters.  ZoomFloppy replaces all X*-1541 cables with a simple USB-based hardware device guaranteed to work with today's machines using today's multitasking operating systems.  Simply plug into any free USB port, connect your CBM drive via a serial cable, and transfer data to or from your software collection.

Product Features

  • Attach any CBM serial device to your PC, including printers
  • Works with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
  • Open Source solution, no vendor lock-in
  • Active development community
  • Minimal footprint, no external power supply needed
  • Parallel access hardware support

NOTE: ZoomFloppy requires an IEC cable (sold separately), an IEEE cable if using the IEEE version and targeting IEEE drives (sold separately), and a USB to mini-USB cable (available at many computer stores).

More information is available at: http://www.go4retro.com/products/zoomfloppy/.

Stocking Note: The non-IEEE and the IEEE version differ only in the presence or absence of the IEEE connector.  That said, they are stocked as two separate items and we are sometimes out of one or the other. If the IEEE version is out of stock, we can often solder connectors to the non-IEEE version, but the reverse is not true.  Thus, if the non-IEEE version is showing as out of stock, please consider the IEEE version or check back, as we try to keep both in stock at all times

    Works like a charm

Setting up the device was nearly "too" easy (on Mac OS X) - no need for tinkering around ;-). The 8-bit-fever is spreading...

    Works great

Posted by Unknown on 27th Jan 2016

Years ago I was able to transfer some of my C64 stuff to a PC CD using a Commodore 1581 drive, an Amiga, and a Zip drive. This worked OK for files and some cracked games but not for much else. The Zoom Floppy lets you transfer files or make disk images directly from the CBM drive (no computer needed). As I only have a 1541 it doesn't work well with copy protection (although almost every C64 program is available as a disk image nowdays). I had some disks which had deteriorated over the years, but I got almost all of my collection transferred. Thanks for this great product.

Whether backing up my existing floppies to pc or creating new floppies from backups or thru downloads off of the internet this item is amazing for $35. Does exactly what i needed it to do. I am thrilled with this product.

This IS the board you're looking for.

Hey, you. Yea, the fellow looking for a simple way to read data to and from vintage equipment (such as Commodore 64 floppy drives). This is bar none the easier and best solution. Just true to the old days "write data to storage medium" and "read data onto vintage hardware". It works perfectly.

Nice retro tool, but requires aligned support

Posted by Kris on 26th Nov 2015

Loving the device but it was a struggle to get it to work. There are unique dependencies you have to take into account when using newer versions of Windows, and how to tackle these. Secondly the behavior of the LED (it turns off once installed) should be added to the documentation, as well as adding c1541.exe to the installation directory afterwards, or some features might not work. Also how to tackle uninstallation if you have installed wrong version of opencbm (because you see lots of behavior like the LED which is not explained) Put these small remarks all together, it is crucial documentation is updated, else you leave too much room for assumptions and negative feedback. The customer is not the expert, no not forget that :) It works nicely.. but it required lots of effort in my case. The tool/device as such is marvelous, very happy with it! In my profession, I'm ICT development lead for a large oil company, so I know what I'm talking about. Keep up the good work! Make it better!

    Great Device. Works as advertised.

I bought this to replace my aging xm1541 cable. One of the reasons was its ability to work with the 1571 drive without the need for the parallel cable. I didn't want to hack my only drive, but I needed to make sure I could back up all my disks. After installing the drivers and adding the other requirements, I had it operational in less than 15 minutes. I have yet to find a disk it won't back up. Great job.

Fantastic solution for easy PC-to-1541 connectivity

Posted by Matt Williams on 28th Oct 2015

Bought this device to use as a "no muss, no fuss" solution for performing 1541 drive operations from my PC, and it turned out to be everything I hoped it would. Driver installation is a snap, and CBM Xfer is a breeze to use. I'm able to copy and edit files directly from my C64 disks as well as clone to/from D64 images. This is definitely the way to go if you're needing to create backups of your disks OR wanting to create custom disk libraries of your various C64 games and programs. Absolutely brilliant product; heartily recommended to all C64 enthusiasts and preservationists.

    Way to go Retro!

Posted by TrekKnight on 4th Oct 2015

It's been years since I played with my C64/C128 hardware. I started a recent project and discovered my once prized X1541 cable didn't work with anything anymore. So I researched and found ZoomFloppy. I agree with the other reviews posted. There is a bit of learning and I did have to remember how to edit BAT files. However, the device works great with OpenCBM and VICE, which is why I bought it. Slow direct load times, but a great way to archive to D64 and to bring D64 files back to a native floppy for direct loads on a real C64.
