Product Overview

In late 2010, a group of folks suggested the need for a KERNAL replacement cartridge.  This cartridge would allow those with socketed KERNAL ROMs to enjoy KERNAL upgrades like JiffyDOS and would also help KERNAL developers try out new ideas before committing them to EPROM.  Due to the complexity of “replacing” a ROM inside a machine without physically removing it, a Commodore Bounty was created to encourage someone to develop the solution.  Thomas Giesel took up the challenge, finding a novel solution to the complexity, and developing an economically viable solution.  Along the way, Thomas merged in some additional features, and the result is EasyFlash 3.

EasyFlash 3 offers a number of features:

  • 8 8kB slots for alternative KERNAL ROM images,
  • 7 EasyFlash I cartridge image slots.
  • Support for the following cartridge formats
    • Normal 8k
    • Normal 16k
    • Ultimax
    • Ocean Type 1
    • EasyFlash
    • EasyFlash xbank
  • Compatibility with Action Replay, Retro Replay, Nordic Power, and Super Snapshot 5 images.
  • Field upgradeable firmware and hardware configuration
  • Ability to replace/add/remove images from the C64

EasyFlash can be used on the C64, C64C, and SX64.  C128/C128D use is not currently supported.

Note: C64 motherboard model 326298 requires a modification to operate with the EF3 (or any cartridge that pulls the reset line). Options are discussed in this thread: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46277

buy one!! seriously, just buy one...

well, i say in the headline of the review that you should buy one, but frankly you should buy as many as you can afford... this is a stunning board and an absolute must for anyone with a C64... but, be warned, if you live in the UK, like i do, then be prepared to add extra onto the overall cost to take into account the import tax and post office admin fee... this isn't a massive amount, and the board is still totally worth the money, but it is worth remembering...

absolute must for anyone with a C64...

Posted by bobbi on 16th Nov 2013

a while ago i bought a kit to build an original EasyFlash cart, which i built and loved, however, after a while i was stupid enough to unplug it while the C64 was turned on and it stopped working, i was gutted and needed to replace it ASAP... i almost ordered another kit and then decided that if i liked the original EasyFlash, then i'd be an idiot to not get an EasyFlash3... so i ordered one, and frankly, as much as i loved the original version, it wasn't a patch on this one, i'm stunned by how much better it is, and faster too... build quality is excellent and delivery was pretty quick considering it had to make it's way over the atlantic... one thing to bear in mind though, if you're in the UK, is that you will prolly have to pay a customs charge on delivery, it's only £15 and still makes the EF3 worth every penny, but def worth remembering so it's not a shock...

    Serious about C64? Get this.

If you do any sort of programming, you need this. The ability to quickly & easily switch between kernal ROMs is fantastic. The ability to have hundreds of software programs load in seconds is fantastic. The ability to have 2 Replay images AND a Super Snapshot 5 image on cart is fantastic. Plus, the ability to easily transfer data and programs between the C64 & PC via USB with 3rd party software comes in handy.

Using the installed Easy Prog program and my C64SD2 Advanced, was able to load 6 different EZFlash games, Retro Reply v3.8 bin image and SS5 bin image. I then tested all after they were loaded and they all worked flawlessly. Fantastic product... Highly recommend.

    Quality stuff as always

Posted by Dave Nowka on 11th Apr 2012

Got mine 2 days ago. Proceeded to plug it in along with my C64 SD2 Advanced. Loaded the EasyProg from the Menu (great feature) and then loaded the following easyflash carts into different slots: Prince of Persia, Epyx Games Collection, Cinemaware Collection, Project Firestart, Games Collection and Maniac Mansion-Zak McCraken. I then ran each from the menu and all worked smoothly. Haven't figured out how to load a Super Snapshot 5 NTSC cart yet since after it finishes writing to flash the S option on the menu still is greyed out. Haven't tried an alternate kernal yet but will after I am done playing! Great stuff as always from Jim, thank you
