Product Overview

In late 2010, a group of folks suggested the need for a KERNAL replacement cartridge.  This cartridge would allow those with socketed KERNAL ROMs to enjoy KERNAL upgrades like JiffyDOS and would also help KERNAL developers try out new ideas before committing them to EPROM.  Due to the complexity of “replacing” a ROM inside a machine without physically removing it, a Commodore Bounty was created to encourage someone to develop the solution.  Thomas Giesel took up the challenge, finding a novel solution to the complexity, and developing an economically viable solution.  Along the way, Thomas merged in some additional features, and the result is EasyFlash 3.

EasyFlash 3 offers a number of features:

  • 8 8kB slots for alternative KERNAL ROM images,
  • 7 EasyFlash I cartridge image slots.
  • Support for the following cartridge formats
    • Normal 8k
    • Normal 16k
    • Ultimax
    • Ocean Type 1
    • EasyFlash
    • EasyFlash xbank
  • Compatibility with Action Replay, Retro Replay, Nordic Power, and Super Snapshot 5 images.
  • Field upgradeable firmware and hardware configuration
  • Ability to replace/add/remove images from the C64

EasyFlash can be used on the C64, C64C, and SX64.  C128/C128D use is not currently supported.

Note: C64 motherboard model 326298 requires a modification to operate with the EF3 (or any cartridge that pulls the reset line). Options are discussed in this thread: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46277

It's a good and cheap way to boost your C64, Very easy to use and greatly improve other devices you can have (like a SD2IEC) with fast loaders.

    easy flash is great

Posted by darwin on 10th May 2014

Mostly bought it to play the C64 flash games. I am really impress how the easy flash games pops up right away. Now, it is possible to save the game which uses the extra memory. No more waiting for the 1541 to load the game. Easy to install the flash games. Somehow, I deleted the main program for easy flash but Jim got me going again.

    Fantastic

Incredibly convenient and easy to use, this is a must have for anyone with a C64. Five stars, but does that mean no room for improvement? Not quite. The case is a bit flimsy, especially compared to the EasyFlash. Also wish there was a USB driver for MacOS. And now that my C64 power supply has died I would like to use the EasyFlash3 on my C128, but it's not compatible. Despite those things, it's still a wonderful product and well worth the price.

    PERFETTA

Great product - Writes d64 images

Posted by Unknown on 17th Apr 2014

I mainly ordered the Easyflash v3 for its ability to use different kernals on unmodified c64, so I was able to use parallel speeder Kernals on my unmodified sx64. After playing around with it I found out that it is possible to write d64 images via USB to a real floppy connected to the C64 in a quite fast way. This is a great feature because I like using real floppys :-) The other features, using EasyFlash images, Replay and SuperSnapshot, work as expected. In my opinion this is a must have module for every C64 owner.

    Great!

The first thing you should do is write a disk with EasyProg. If for some reason you destroy the firmware you can simply re/initialize a new EasyFlash3.

Soooo convenient and easy to use

I am really happy with this. It has made transferring software directly from my PC to my C64 simple and fast. Creating games collections that boot from ROM is easy. I haven't used the kernal switcher facility yet, but I can see how this would make a physical jiffydos upgrade to a C64 redundant! Product quality is alsom pretty good.

burn until 7 crt file is a Great feature and also great is the chance to have more KERNAL ROM to boot. Finally is possible use Action Replay and SS5 image to help in coding like have real card, (even if my favorite card is FF3 and it not work, for 60$ this EasyFlash3 go really beyond all the expectations )
