Product Overview

Hold the entire collection of Commodore games and utilities in the palm of your hand! No more lugging a CBM disk drive around, worrying about disk “rot”, swapping disks, and being without your favorite software. Transfer files to the Commodore simply by dragging files to the solid state SD/SDHC card on your PC/Mac. Need more storage? Visit the local big box store or online e-tailer for gigabytes of solid state storage.

The “Micro” IEC offers that and more, supporting Secure Digital (SD) and SDHC solid state storage up to 32GB in size, emulating the CBM DOS functionality (including select CMD HD DOS operations), and supporting the JiffyDOS drive transfer protocol. The unit is small enough to embed, but large enough to satisfy even the most discerning retro-computer enthusiast.

The device even offers the ability to better itself after purchase. As new firmware updates are released, simply copy the new firmware to the SD card, reset the device, and watch it upgrade itself.

Think about it, this addition to your Commodore collection is new and costs less than the going eBay-rate for a 1581. But the Storage capacity is Far beyond a 1581! Switching out SD Cards (which are cheap) is a snap - each SD Card is like adding another free 1581 drive or any other 1571 or 1541 drive. And FAST, the uIEC is faster than any mechanical drive without wearing out parts!

All of this in 2.25 square inches of silicon and circuitry. Grab one or more today!

Notes:

  • For correct operation, the unit requires a Commodore IEC serial cable (available in our store, though any disk drive serial cable should work)
  • In order to utilize the JiffyDOS transfer speeds, the computer must have JiffyDOS installed. JiffyDOS is available in our store.
  • uIEC/SD is available in 3 configurations:
    • bare: The unit comes without any daughtercard or connector.  This option is useful for folks wishing to add an additional unit to a uIEC/SD Deluxe Daughtercard
    • edge connector: The unit is supplied with just the 1x13 edge connector.  This is useful for folks planning to embed the uIEC/SD into another structure.
    • deluxe: The base unit is paired with a small PCB (this is useful for folks who desire less clutter and want the unit close to the machine.
      The PCB provides:
      • 2 IEC ports (which allows daisy chaining)
      • buttons for swap list navigation
      • a reset button
      • a jumper configuration setting that allows or prevents a machine reset from also resetting the drive.
      • direct connection to the C64/C128 cassette port for power
      • dual uIEC/SD connectors, to allow vertical or horizontal configuration
      • Mini USB port for external power (use any standard 5V phone charger, or a cable to your PC

Great Device for Improving the Commodore Computing Experience

Posted by Unknown on 14th Apr 2016

Purchased the complete version of this unit. At first I had a little trouble figuring out how to use it. Jim Brain was more than helpful in getting me kick-started. A few emails later, and it is up and running. I am using a 4G SD to start. Plenty of room for lots of programs. I added JiffyDOS to my C64. I highly recommend this addition, as it makes accessing the directories and programs on the uIEC SD simpler. Together, the uIEC and JiffyDOS make the whole Commodore-Computing experience more fun.

I'm getting more requests to install it inside computers

Posted by Ray Carlsen on 30th Mar 2016

I've installed this SD reader in several C64's and C128DCR computers. When facing the user, the LEDs are very bright, so I changed the SMD resistors from 330 ohms to 4.7K 1/8W to dim them down. The reader is a nice addition to the computer and with JiffyDOS is -really- fast compared to a disk drive. Mounting is a challenge but not too difficult. All in all a great product.

    Not only for Commodores

Posted by Andy on 22nd Sep 2015

Back in the 80's there was a DOS for the Synertek SYM-1 which supported the 1541 drives. With minimal work, I have the uIEC running quite happily on this legacy system.

    uIEC/SD and JiffyDOS works Great!!!

Posted by Unknown on 26th Aug 2015

I purchased JiffyDOS ROM and a uIEC/SD drive. After I changed out the ROM chip and plugged the SD daughter board, I couldn't detect the device. I emailed RETRO, and Jim replied promptly. After a few emails, Jim determined that I didn't have the serial cable for the daughter board. Ordered the serial cable from RETRO. Problem was solved. Thanks RETRO for the prompt customer service!

    Perfect SD disk drive

Posted by Andrew on 29th Jul 2015

I am very happy with my purchase of this SD2IEC disk drive. There are good improvements over my last one such as the swap, reset and advance buttons. The speed and operation are second to none. Also, the delivery was very fast, just as promised by the excellent Mr. Jim Brain.

A great Mass Storage Device and 1581 alternate

Posted by Paul on 26th Jul 2015

Recently purchased the uIEC with latest deluxe daughterboard. What a great product. This fits in well with my 1541, 1571 and 1581. Since 1581 drives go for ridiculous money these days this is a great alternative. I put in a SD card I had laying around which was a measly 64MB. It resulted in 61000 some odd blocks free. OF course you can use large cards too. While it does load and save a bit faster then a stock drive, like maybe 60%, when you combine it with JiffyDOS it is very fast. I highly recommend this device to anyone that ones mass storage and it is great for transferring files from the internet to your C64 and from your 64 to your PC. If you don't want to open your 64 to install JiffyDOS or maybe your 64 kernal is not socketed then I recommend an EasyFlash 3 to go with this. Purchase the EF3, a JiffyDOS 64 ROM image, write it to one of the EF3's kernal slots and you have instant JiffyDOS to use on your 64. You can purchase all those things right here.

    good product needs documentation

Posted by Unknown on 16th Feb 2015

I have recently purchased my sixth uiec/sd. I have a Commodore 128 on my desk, we have one in engineering, we have one on the order desk, we have one in book keeping and we have a 64 in shipping. Each has a card drive (uiec/s). I recently came across a 16 GB card that works with the uiec/sd. I decided that that would be a great backup. So I bought the sixth unit to piggy back it so that now I can set one sd drive as drive 8 and the other as drive at 10 and copy all my programs and files to a 16 GB card and have a safe backup for all our programs and files. I am very happy with the uiec/sd drives.
