Product Overview

Hold the entire collection of Commodore games and utilities in the palm of your hand! No more lugging a CBM disk drive around, worrying about disk “rot”, swapping disks, and being without your favorite software. Transfer files to the Commodore simply by dragging files to the solid state SD/SDHC card on your PC/Mac. Need more storage? Visit the local big box store or online e-tailer for gigabytes of solid state storage.

The “Micro” IEC offers that and more, supporting Secure Digital (SD) and SDHC solid state storage up to 32GB in size, emulating the CBM DOS functionality (including select CMD HD DOS operations), and supporting the JiffyDOS drive transfer protocol. The unit is small enough to embed, but large enough to satisfy even the most discerning retro-computer enthusiast.

The device even offers the ability to better itself after purchase. As new firmware updates are released, simply copy the new firmware to the SD card, reset the device, and watch it upgrade itself.

Think about it, this addition to your Commodore collection is new and costs less than the going eBay-rate for a 1581. But the Storage capacity is Far beyond a 1581! Switching out SD Cards (which are cheap) is a snap - each SD Card is like adding another free 1581 drive or any other 1571 or 1541 drive. And FAST, the uIEC is faster than any mechanical drive without wearing out parts!

All of this in 2.25 square inches of silicon and circuitry. Grab one or more today!

Notes:

  • For correct operation, the unit requires a Commodore IEC serial cable (available in our store, though any disk drive serial cable should work)
  • In order to utilize the JiffyDOS transfer speeds, the computer must have JiffyDOS installed. JiffyDOS is available in our store.
  • uIEC/SD is available in 3 configurations:
    • bare: The unit comes without any daughtercard or connector.  This option is useful for folks wishing to add an additional unit to a uIEC/SD Deluxe Daughtercard
    • edge connector: The unit is supplied with just the 1x13 edge connector.  This is useful for folks planning to embed the uIEC/SD into another structure.
    • deluxe: The base unit is paired with a small PCB (this is useful for folks who desire less clutter and want the unit close to the machine.
      The PCB provides:
      • 2 IEC ports (which allows daisy chaining)
      • buttons for swap list navigation
      • a reset button
      • a jumper configuration setting that allows or prevents a machine reset from also resetting the drive.
      • direct connection to the C64/C128 cassette port for power
      • dual uIEC/SD connectors, to allow vertical or horizontal configuration
      • Mini USB port for external power (use any standard 5V phone charger, or a cable to your PC

Great device, though boards hadn't been cleaned

Posted by Sean Lynch on 12th Nov 2020

After about ten minutes with anhydrous isopropyl alcohol and an acid brush, this has been a great little device. I love that I have multiple options for how to connect it. Right now I have it plugged in to the tape port, but I may move it behind my monitor on top of the floppy drive at some point. I'm not sure it's worth dropping a whole star just because I had to clean the boards, but I can't rate 4.5 stars. RI: I think the rating is fair. The PCB Assembly house uses no clean solder, so the residue is sometimes more pronounced, but it will not affect operation. Lately, the units have been cleaner, but it's dependent on batch.

    Important!

The descriptions should state that by default this acts as a generic floppy drive 10. SAVE"TEST",10 will work.

uIEC is the best iec2sd I have run across

Posted by John Saller on 8th Sep 2020

I have always wanted a iec2sd so bought a cheap one and have been using it for years. Finally got a uIEC and wish I had saved up to buy this one. Faster (I have Jiffy Dos) seems to work much better and the deluxe Daughtercard is fantastic. The Daughtercard allows you to use a micro usb for power and a second female socket for a serial cable! Works great with my easyflash3 even on my c128!

I have purchased several of these. They are the best way to play games on the commodore, a great experience. Please offer a 3d print case file!

A fantastic option for bulk file storage!

Posted by Jeff on 17th Feb 2018

I recently purchased the uIEC with the deluxe daughter card. The primary use will be to serve as the mass storage device used by my BBS. It has worked flawlessly and it is an absolute bargain. The LEDs are a nice touch to indicate it is operating correctly and the buttons on the daughter board make it easy to perform swaps of mounted d64 images. I have mine daisy chained inline with a 1541 Ultimate 2 and 1581 disk drive. You will want JiffyDOS installed in your Commodore for best performance. Highly recommended!

How does anyone get by without one of these?

Posted by William McKeever on 14th Nov 2017

Highly recommend to anyone to pick up a JiffyDOS Kernal ROM from here as well to go along with this fantastic piece of hardware. You will not believe how much faster load times are with both!! Don't forget to add the cable as well if you need one. I plan to mount this one internally in my C64-C when I finish recapping the board and will pick up another for my Breadbin when that is done. Must point out that shipping time was much quicker than I was expecting. Definitely will recommend Retro Innovations to anyone looking for one of these devices.

    Hard to believe

Posted by Robert M. on 10th Jul 2017

Converting from my old 1571's to the uIEC/SD (deluxe) was one of the best things I could do to bring new life into the beast. Using WarpCopy and the 64NIC+ I was able to finally archive my floppies to image files and stop worrying about floppy bit rot... and with a 32GB SD card in the uIEC, I still have what seems like endless space. My 64 does not have JiffyDOS, but the uIEC works well with my Fastload, Mach 5, and the SJLoad software loader. The FB/FB64 menu software makes using this a breeze, but it was very quick to pick up how to move around using just the good old DOS Wedge. Well made. Well packed for shipping to avoid damage. Arrived very quickly. I really couldn't be happier.
